Day 4: Ellon to Aberdeen

Table of Contents

Tolquhon Castle

Follow in the footsteps of King James 6th of Scotland and visit one of the North East’s most picturesque castles Tolquhon. The remains of the Preston Tower is the earliest part, dating back 600 years to 1420, but the most interesting is the impressive gatehouse, built in the 1580’s, complete with towers, coats of arms and defensive gun loops. It was just after this work was completed when the castle was visited by the King. Look out for the rare signature initials of the castles architect Thomas Leiper on the exterior of the main house.

Ellon Castle Gardens

Ruins of a castle possibly dating as far back as the early 1400's and overlooking a splendid formal castle garden with a magnificent collection of yew trees, some as old as 800 years.
